HSBC has activated its Hong Kong dollar–pegged stablecoin within the PayMe mobile wallet, the bank announced on Friday. The launch marks a pilot phase intended to determine whether a digital token issued directly by a traditional bank can serve as routine currency for daily transactions.
By embedding the stablecoin into an existing payments platform, the lender is gauging both consumer appetite and technical feasibility for stable-value crypto assets in ordinary commerce. The initiative places HSBC at the forefront of banking-sector experimentation with tokenized fiat in Hong Kong.
