Texas Instruments (TI) announced a staggering investment exceeding $60 billion to construct and expand seven semiconductor fabrication plants across Texas and Utah. This unprecedented commitment to domestic manufacturing will not only bolster the American semiconductor industry but also generate over 60,000 new jobs nationwide.
The monumental investment represents the largest single commitment to foundational semiconductor manufacturing in US history, underscoring TI's dedication to its legacy of technological leadership. This expansion of US manufacturing capacity aims to meet the burgeoning global demand for semiconductors vital to countless technological advancements, ranging from automobiles and smartphones to data centers.
The project encompasses seven large-scale, interconnected fabrication facilities spread across three major manufacturing sites. These facilities are projected to produce hundreds of millions of domestically manufactured chips daily. Construction is already well underway, with the first fab, SM1 in Sherman, Texas, slated to commence initial production this year—a remarkable feat considering its groundbreaking just three years ago. Furthermore, the exterior of SM2 is complete, and plans are in place for two additional fabs, SM3 and SM4, at this location to address future demand. The expansion also includes RFAB2 in Richardson, Texas.
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick lauded TI's century-long history of American innovation and manufacturing excellence. He further highlighted the Trump administration's focus on bolstering domestic semiconductor production, emphasizing the importance of foundational semiconductors integral to everyday electronics. TI's significant investment underscores a continued commitment to the United States and its technological future, reinforcing the nation's position in the global semiconductor landscape.
