Cosmos EVM exploit drains MANTRA, TAC and KiiChain in cross-chain attacks

Disclosures reveal that a critical vulnerability within the Cosmos EVM was leveraged by malicious actors, leading to a significant security breach. This exploit unfolded dynamically across six distinct blockchain networks over a five-day window spanning late August. Through a sophisticated maneuver, the perpetrators successfully converted the illicitly acquired tokens, culminating in the siphoning of nearly $6 million in value. This conversion was executed via a combination of decentralized and centralized trading platforms, effectively cashing out the proceeds of the breach.

According to findings disseminated by Cosmos Labs, the window of exposure was identified as the period between August 20th and August 25th. The organization has since confirmed the coordinated nature of the attacks, which capitalized on a specific weakness in the EVM compatibility layer. The financial impact of these incidents is substantial, with the stolen assets, after being processed through various exchange mechanisms, totaling approximately $5.72 million.

The technical details point to a systemic flaw that allowed for unauthorized token minting or transfer. By navigating the complexities of both decentralized finance (DeFi) and centralized finance (CeFi) ecosystems, the exploiters managed to obscure the origin of the funds and liquidate them into more stable or convertible assets. This event underscores the persistent threats facing blockchain interoperability solutions and highlights the critical importance of rigorous security audits in the rapidly evolving landscape of cross-chain protocols.
