Intel Corporation's stock surged 6% in early Wednesday trading following the announcement that the semiconductor giant has agreed to reacquire full ownership of its flagship Irish manufacturing facility. The company will pay $14.2 billion to buy back the 49% stake held by Apollo Global Management in the Fab 34 plant, a move that restores Intel's complete control over a critical piece of its advanced manufacturing infrastructure.
This strategic repurchase, as widely reported across internet sources, will see the company utilize a blend of its existing cash reserves and approximately $6.5 billion in new debt to complete the transaction. The deal marks a significant reversal from the 2024 arrangement, during which Apollo invested $11.2 billion for the minority stake to provide Intel with vital capital when the company faced intense financial pressure and was aggressively funding its manufacturing turnaround.
Leadership framed the buyback as a testament to a strengthened financial position. David Zinsner, Intel's Chief Financial Officer, noted the company now operates with a more robust balance sheet and disciplined strategy compared to the period of the original joint venture, stating, "Today, we have a stronger balance sheet, improved financial discipline and an evolved business strategy."
Financial projections indicate the transaction will be accretive to earnings per share beginning in 2027 and is expected to enhance Intel's overall credit metrics. This positive outlook, coupled with the symbolic return to full ownership of a key asset, was received enthusiastically by investors, directly fueling the notable share price appreciation.
Situated in Leixlip on the outskirts of Dublin, Fab 34 is a cornerstone of Intel's manufacturing network. The facility produces advanced semiconductors using Intel 4 and Intel 3 process technologies, primarily fabricating Core Ultra processors for client computers and Xeon processors for data center servers. As Intel's first high-volume chip manufacturing plant in Europe, Fab 34's full operational control is considered pivotal for executing the company's long-term supply chain and technology roadmap.
