Nintendo's remarkable success with its newly released Switch 2 console has propelled the company to record-breaking financial results. The company announced that a staggering 5.82 million units were sold globally within the first 25 days of its June launch, a figure significantly exceeding initial projections and setting a new benchmark for first-month sales within the gaming industry. This exceptional performance contributed directly to the company's impressive quarterly financial report.
The impressive sales figures translated into a substantial financial windfall for Nintendo. Its quarterly revenue for the period ending June 30th more than doubled compared to the same period last year, primarily fueled by the Switch 2's explosive popularity. This surge in revenue manifested in a 142.5% increase in sales from its video game platform, reaching a total of 555.5 billion yen. Furthermore, the company's operating profit exceeded analyst expectations, reaching 56.9 billion yen, surpassing LSEG's forecast by several billion yen. Net profit also experienced considerable growth, rising by 19%.
However, Nintendo's financial success wasn't entirely monolithic. While the Switch 2 dominated the narrative, its property-related business, encompassing movies and entertainment based on its franchises, experienced a slight downturn. This 4.4% decrease in sales was mainly attributed to lower-than-anticipated revenue from the recent "Super Mario Bros." movie. Despite this minor setback, Nintendo remains optimistic about its overall financial prospects.
Looking ahead, Nintendo projects even greater financial success. The company anticipates selling 15 million Switch 2 units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2026, a forecast that already appears conservative given the impressive initial sales figures. Industry analysts share this optimism. Bloomberg Intelligence's Nathan Naidu suggests that Nintendo could surpass its 15 million unit target, having already achieved 40% of its sales goal within a month. This positive outlook is maintained despite the introduction of new U.S. tariffs, showcasing confidence in the Switch 2's enduring market appeal and sustained demand.
