Microsoft has officially discontinued its Movies & TV store across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, effective immediately. This means users can no longer purchase new movies or TV shows through the Microsoft Store on these platforms.
Previously acquired content remains accessible on registered devices, however, Microsoft explicitly states that no refunds will be issued for past purchases. This decision aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to streamline operations, a move that has included several rounds of layoffs despite substantial annual profits. A Microsoft support page confirms the cessation of new content sales across their online and storefront platforms.
While downloads remain available in high definition on Windows devices, users must now exclusively utilize the Movies & TV app for playback of previously purchased content. Compatibility with alternative streaming services is not guaranteed.
For US customers, Movies Anywhere offers a potential solution for syncing existing libraries with other compatible platforms. Although Microsoft assures continued support for playback issues relating to existing purchases, the long-term availability of these services remains contingent upon Microsoft's ongoing server maintenance.
This closure marks the end of an era for Xbox and Windows users, echoing the earlier discontinuation of the Groove Music service. The decision to shutter the Movies & TV store follows a period of speculation and concern among customers, culminating in today's decisive action by the tech giant.
