Bitstamp gets Singapore crypto license

04.07.2025 13:22

Bitstamp, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, has secured a crucial license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), enabling it to offer its services to Singaporean residents. This announcement, made by the company on Thursday, represents a significant step in Bitstamp's broader strategic expansion across the Asia-Pacific region.

The granting of this license comes after a stringent regulatory crackdown implemented by MAS in June. The authority mandated that all cryptocurrency exchanges catering to international clientele obtain licenses by a specific deadline, or face severe consequences, including expulsion from the market, potential imprisonment, and substantial financial penalties. MAS explicitly stated that licensing would be exceptionally challenging, citing heightened money laundering risks and difficulties in overseeing entities with primary operations outside Singapore.

This assertive regulatory approach generated considerable apprehension among Singapore-based cryptocurrency firms. The looming deadline—Monday—for ceasing operations without a license cast uncertainty over the future of several companies. Despite the challenges, some may still be exploring options for relocation.

Singapore, while exhibiting relatively low domestic cryptocurrency adoption, has nevertheless solidified its position as a leading international hub for digital assets within the Asia-Pacific region, competing alongside Hong Kong. Attracting a wave of crypto companies in 2024, Singapore's pro-innovation regulatory environment and emphasis on robust consumer safeguards played a key role in this success, as evidenced by a doubling of approved crypto business applications compared to 2023.

Paradoxically, high levels of digital asset awareness exist among Singaporeans, with approximately 94% familiar with at least one cryptocurrency, as revealed by the Independent Reserve Cryptocurrency Index Singapore 2025. However, widespread local adoption of cryptocurrencies lags significantly behind this awareness.
