Czech PM faces no-confidence vote over Bitcoin scandal.

17.06.2025 19:05

A no-confidence vote against Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala is currently underway, fueled by allegations surrounding a substantial Bitcoin donation. Fiala vehemently denies accusations that his government is attempting to conceal a $47 million Bitcoin donation from a convicted felon.

The Prime Minister addressed parliament, characterizing the donation as an avoidable complication. He insisted on the government's transparency, asserting their readiness to address any emerging information related to this matter. The Bitcoin donation, originally received by Justice Minister Pavel Blažek, who subsequently sold it for millions earlier this year, originated from an individual with a criminal record involving drug charges. Blažek's resignation on May 30th precipitated the opposition's call for a no-confidence vote.

Fiala acknowledged shortcomings in Blažek's due diligence regarding the donation, admitting that his former minister failed to adequately assess the situation. Ongoing investigations, Fiala stressed, should remain uninfluenced by the opposition's speculative claims.

During a nearly two-hour parliamentary address, Andrej Babiš, billionaire leader of the ANO opposition party, launched a scathing attack, branding Fiala's government as the nation's most corrupt and accusing it of consistent dishonesty, scandal, incompetence, and corruption over the past four years.

While a vote of no confidence requires over 101 votes against Fiala to succeed, the combined opposition forces of ANO and the Freedom and Direct Democracy party currently lack the necessary numbers. Though initially scheduled for today, the actual vote is expected to take place tomorrow, according to ODS member Marek Benda. Information can be submitted securely via Protos Leaks.
